loosen up my buttons baby...

Posted by Picasa
...from a broken heart. joel thinks i should take a picture of myself in the above shirt that beaux sent me, and sent it to LaSalle.....

well after the boyscout and i enjoyed a few margaritas and an escherichia coli free dinner early last night, i dropped him off at hartsfield-jackson to fly out west to see his family. it was entertaining because he is as nervous to fly as I am, even having to go so far as to pop a couple of Zaynecks before getting on the plane.

and with the weather staying as beautiful as it has, i donned a smart wrap, jumped on my bike, and met joel in the park. of course, after a few laps the only thing i could think about was a smart cocktail, and joel was getting hungry. we rode past joe's only to run into an old boyfriend and a mutual friend. it was clear they were on a date, so I capitalized on the moment and put them on the spot. sorry.

we rode on looking for a place with outdoor seating and a scene and found that fresh2order was the place to be. several members of the big bicep club were already there. joel told me all kinds of old dancefloor stories involving the aforementioned club members, and we had light salads and a bottle of wine.

being a gentleman and all, i offered to follow the lady home on my bike. for some reason, we stopped by jm's house on 8th street for a pop in (and i for one know some people don't like that) only to find he and his mom up having a late night drink. well, she was quick to inform me that she had been up for 22 hours, had recently taken an ambien, and was having a scotch before bed. lord, someone keep her out of the pill box. she was tore up, and started asking me thinks like "do you still luuuv jeffrey". but she did pull out the cheese and crackers and put together quite a spread at 11pm at night. we quickly departed, and it was home for me. neat.

I call it love

 Posted by Picasa

I think you're wasted......Probably.

nothing like misheard lyrics.

i have no idea why I would schedule myself to be on call the monday after returning from a two week vacation, but i did. everyone at work was glad to see me, saying i looked well rested. if they only knew of my sunday evening shennanigans. geez. but i do have a nice tan so it covers my rosacea well. thankfully, i wasn't called in for FUPA duty last night and I rested quite well.

the boyscout is in a much better place, and for that I am thankful. I thought i was going to have to put him on suicide watch there for a minute. it seems that he got his GROOVE back as well, and had quite a prosperous back to back weekend at the WetBar. guess it just takes getting laid sometimes to break someone out of a depression, sadness, or just generalized funk or dry spell. in fact, he was kinda randy at work today which was fun and stimulating. i tell you it's hard to hide arousal when you are wearing scrubs and boxer shorts. yikes.

work was slow today so i had an opportunity to visit a friend who traveled with us to ptown and came in today for an unplanned surgery. thankfully, she cruised right through surgery and i found her in the recovery room to be pain free and actually quite jovial. she told me that i looked cute in scrubs, and when i asked her if i could do anything for her, she replied, "yes, grab my bag over there and get me my makeup". get well soon Lee.

i caught up with a friend at work who actually grew up along the cape as a child, and still has a house up there. as I was telling her my plan to try and spend more time in Ptown, she informed me that Cape Cod Hospital just started up an open heart program. Can you say travel nurse? food for thought for sure.

and then there is the weather. i wasn't sure it was going to clear up after the cloud cover i encountered this morning. nothing felt more like ptown than the hour bike ride through the park and ansley with the temp right at 73 degrees. it is days like this that reminds me of how beautiful atlanta really is.

Takin' it back

so nice of diane to welcome me back to reality this morning. just in time to go back to work after a two week hiatus in ptown. it was truly an amazing trip. and my friends are the reason I had such a great time.

here is what i remember, as we are planning a Ptown Post Partum Recovery and Piece Together the two weeks Party next week.....

i danced my ass off at Red Lobster, I mean the A House...almost every night, got my GROOVE back, drank a lot of skinnys (somehow only caught a glimpse of diane), ate some amazing seafood, shopped, drank, experienced many beautiful sunsets, talked to olivia, laughed incessantly at varla jean, went to the atm every night (it grows on trees, right?), turned the light switch on and left it there, drank some more, cried with a very close friend, laughed until my side hurt, went on long bike rides, dressed in drag (hey davita and cmb), caught the showgirls finale awards with none other than debby downer aka jack osbourne, made some really great musical connections, met some of the greatest guys, and generally tried my hardest to relax......and that was real real tough.

ptown doesn't suck.

happy monday.

I'm back with an 808 cause I'm Bossy...

apparently, I am not the only one gearing up for a wonderful trip to PTown. As you can see, Stan and Barry have been real busy. They picked up this handsome hunk while cruising this weekend at the Wal-Mark Supacenter near the Perimeter. You know, because three-way and open relationships are so the in thing right now....at least for the gays. And they almost always work out. ...

Here is how it all happened.....

johnbrown and I ventured out on Saturday for a full day of shopping and preparing for PTown. We did in fact visit a newly renovated Wal-Mart over near Perimeter Mall. lort, why go anywhere else? they have a vision center, grocery store, hair salon, nail salon, and a massengill Refill station for the environment friendly folks. or really hungover teachers who want to stay uber fresh after a late night at the swinger's club Trapeze out on fulton industrial. yuckt. the journey was fruitful and without even trying, a theme to the week was created and the gift bags were finished. creative minds think alike i guess.

next it was lunch at Six Feet Under where I finally had one the city's top rated hamburgers. the bartender is incredibly cute in a very Jake Gyllenaalesque sort of way. so we may have stayed a bit longer and have about 4 beers with our lunch. and then we headed east for a stop by DJs beauty salon where I purchased the most beautiful wig. it's very wynonna judd meets Samantha Fox with just the right amount of blond without looking like a bottle job. and i can spot a bottle job from 20 paces. I had to have a new outfik to accompany my new locks so on to value village where my drag costume finally came together. as did my drag name, "Davita Dialysis". how fitting for someone who works in healthcare. having big feet and all, we stopped by Payless shoes where the outfit was completed. johnbrown picked up a lovely pair of freesparks to round out his Ponce De Leon Barbie number.

cut to my house an hour and a 6 pack later, where we were dancing in full drag to Gnarls Barkley.

only 5 days until we leave..........there is much to be done. thank god i am only working 3 days....

and i miss you....

johnbrown will find this funny. i saw my horoscope this morning in the local fag rag and it says, "It may take some effort, but Caps can dazzle like nobody's business when they want to." we shall see......

The flight staff served the curry chicken

I have had this strange craving for Lasagna over the past week, so I left work early yesterday and went to work in the kitchen. I wanted to make real Lasagna, with italian sausage and fresh ingredients, rather than using spaghetti sauce. I invited the Mayor over for dinner, and he arrived almost a six pack ahead of me, as he had been at the Vans Warped tour with his boss earlier in the day. The recipe i printed off of some random site seemed easy enough; browning the meat, simmering the sauce, baking the final product. (note: i don't cook very often so this is a big deal to me). While the lasagna was baking, the mayor and i took advantage of the beautiful evening and sat out on my balcony admiring the new condo building across from me. We sat there trying to figure out the dynamics of the guys living on the 7th floor of the new glass building: two guys in their mid-thirties and one in his late 60's. And I know this by peering through the pair of Bushnell binoculars that my mom gave me. Is it a 3 way relationship? An ill parent? Still, every afternoon, the three of them sit out on the balcony together, staring into the bright afternoon sun.

The lasagna turned out to be quite good, though it could have used a bit more sauce. I was thinking that we would walk down the street for dessert, maybe some ice cream from the new place over at Spire. Instead, a few bottles of wine later, I found myself engaged in a full-fledged-above-the-waist-make-out-session. Which was just fine in my book. I awoke this morning, 10 hours of restful sleep later, with my jeans still on and no sign of diane. So I wonder, will something as simple as a home cooked meal end this drought?

on tap for the weekend: some pool time with johnbrown. i wonder if the assistant is receiving?

and when all your dreams have turned....into dust

Posted by Picasa
No, I didn't take this photo out in Paulding County, it was actually taken in Athens, Georgia. Go figure, a college town with southern boys, so the above sign is real important if you 'dip snuff....

You see, I was there for a wedding. And it was a big weekend, it being Pride and all, so there is much to discuss.

Friday night, I spun an A-List Pride Party hosted by LittleJohn and his crew over at the Plaza midtown, complete with rainbow decorations and a couple of middle-aged bartenders that I presume were straight. Though I did catch them bouncing side to side to the beat later in the night. In true gay fashion, no one really arrived until after 9pm. but when they did, they marched in like the doozers on fraggle rock. geez, I couldn't believe how many handsome men were packed into that clubhouse. Though my set wasn't planned, I just fed off of the energy in the room and I feel that everyone enjoyed the music. i even spotted anderson cooper in the crowd, and word is he flew in just to hear me spin....or that is just what I keep telling myself.

I drove to Athens on Saturday for a wedding for a college friend. With Diane in tow, I had to nap before heading off to the wedding with Becky as my date. Now never having been a bride, i just don't understand why someone would have an outdoor wedding in the middle of June in Georgia. It is safe to say that I didn't stop sweating until almost midnight. and it was a highly emotional wedding. The bride, a girl i dated in college and have know for over twelve years, cried throughout the ceremony. afterwards, food was served (again outside, at least it was under a very large tent) and later a band inside? we danced and i continued to sweat.

I drove back on Sunday s it was time for me to get my Pride on and spend some time with the gays. Eric and Johnbrown hosted a wonderful party on 11th street. I showed up at 1pm with Pride tunes in hand only to be greeted to a packed condo with just about all of my friends. And just like clockwork, the rain came, only this time the lightning was close by and later caused the closing of piedmont park. that was fine, as we just continued to be Proud on the porch. it was much fun indeed. we later walked through the drizzle to Brad and Joel's for more porch time. and without planning, we did make it to Eleven50 for the T-Dance but I left after only about two hours. The place was entirely too dark, and unlike Backstreet, they don't have lit staircases. oh, and I was wearing shorts and wet sneakers from the aforementioned walk through the park and just wasn't feeling too cute.

And then there was the music. I was interested in hearing Chus & Ceballos but I am not sure that their progressive Iberican Sound from Portugal is the appropriate type of music to be playing at a closing Pride Tea Dance. What happened to Classics? Pete Heller - Big Love? Fun? Happy? Half the people there were all chewed up from partying all weekend, and the other half were just having trouble getting into the groove with the theater filled with reverberating sounds. I walked home around 9:45pm and called it a night. There is always next year.

Making love to you is a habit

Last night, I went with Mark and Chris to hear Bonnie Raitt at Chastain. One of my many new years resolutions was to attend more concerts, instead of going out to the same clubs to hear the same DJs. Believe it or not, I do enjoy other types of music. Hell I was a spreadhead at one point in my life. So we packed several bottles of wine and headed to north buckhead in the blazing afternoon heat. parking was an issue, and we drove past several of the reserved lots, and even asked one of the uniformed officers where we could pay to park. She asked, "how much you willin' to pay", and when I replied with "$20" she laughed. so i drove on and later found a free spot that required some very skilled parallel parking.

it was damn hot outside and so we started drinking the white wine, being sardonnay shipping queens that we are, and soon I had a nice buzz going. nevermind the fact that we didn't plan well like all the other suburbanites with the full spread of light bites and chicken fingers. Mark brought us all back hotdogs that managed to soak up some of the alcohol.

Bonnie came out and I was really impressed with how beautiful a voice she really has. Even in her Late 50's, she was stunning, both visually and acoustically. The majority of the show featured new tracks from her 18th album, yes 18th, with a perfect blend of rock, blues, and even country. Towards the end of the show, she did break out some of her signature tracks like "something to talk about" and "I can't make you Love me" which gave me chills.

It seems that everyone caught a brief glimpse of Diane this morning. I wonder why?

...spinning the rhythms in 331/3 servings preaching the sound of our new gospel..

It was a rather low key weekend for me. I did get to see my parents twice this weekend. First, Robert and I met them Saturday afternoon for lunch, and just like clockwork, they ordered the same thing...again. i don't know why I find that so amusing, I guess all of us become creatures of routine as we get older, but come on....live a little. and getting older is a definite. my dad turns 67 this year and is really beginning to age. I noticed at lunch he as all these bruises on his arms where he just bumped into something. It really made me feel sad as I know he is in good health, but you can't expect him to live forever.

so being Father's Day on sunday, I drove out to east cobb (said in a snooty voice) to visit with my parents and have a perfect southern meal. Mom caught me up on all the gossip and drama with the neighbors living around them. The "supper" consisted of barbecue ribs, corn on the cob, and baked beans. And my dad's favorite: Key Lime Pie. It was a nice visit, only I wished my sister and her family were there.

So no going out for me as a busy week lies ahead. as john brown has said, I suppose it is just the calm before the storm, with Pride coming next weekend. Though I am a little disappointed that I won't be spinning at the Woodruff Arts Saturday night, I am excited about spinning over at John Flippen's condo friday evening. It seems necessary to play some crowd favorites, you know, so everyone can sing aloud and be Proud. It's funny to think about how I spent Pride weekend through the years, and how I now find it only necessary to be among friends to have fun, rather than attending the circuit events and t-dances. Not to say that I may never end up at one this year, it just isn't a priority anymore. Erik and Johnbrown's "bloodys and bagels" party will surely be a blast.

'cause I got jesus as my copilot....

I just love when my monthly meeting with the nurse practice council finishes early for the day. it seems that we had exhausted reviewing all the policies and procedures for chest tube insertions and tracheostomy care by 1 pm. or maybe it was because there was a uniform scrub sale taking place in the Rich Auditorium today. all the ladies were looking forward to being fitted for the new window-pane-patterned- flair-leg Landau scrubs. apparently, they provide a slimming effect and make the thighs appear smaller, ifyouknowwhatimean. I ain't complaining as I get to work a half day in the middle of the week which is a refreshing change.

Plus, it allows me time to get ready for my date tonight with Eric. It's been awhile and I am all jazzed about manscaping with my new Norelco Body Groomer. Seriously, we are heading over to Actor's Express this evening to see The Last Sunday in June, a play about a group of friends that get together to celebrate NYC's gay pride. And what a perfect piece of theater considering that Atlanta's own celebration will take place in less than two weeks. Did I mention that I am putting together a PRIDE megamix for Sunday's "Bloodys and Bagels" fete over on Erik's terrace? I am thinking something anthemic, happy, bouncy, slightly poppy, and even a bit cheesy. Suggestions are appreciated.

Here's one: Rozalla - Everybody's Free (to feel good). I just came across the DJ nick's extended mix on Beatport, this cheeky little number may just be the perfect start.

all around that's me, many troubles

if there is one word I could use to describe this past weekend....it would be.....Typi.....er....HOT. and i mean that in many different ways. here's why....

friday night, i went to the Buddy Guy concert at the Botanical Gardens. this was my first time at this venue, and it is really nice to be sitting out on the lawn listening to blues with a view of the midtown skyline in the background. the crowd was extremely diverse, from hemp-wearing Spreadheads to salt and pepper daddies from garden hills to the occasional middle-aged gwinnetian in a woven leather belt. buddy put on a show, but my favorite part of the concert was the keyboardist. incredible talent. i just cannot wait for Taylor Dayne later this summer.

then is was a stop by midcity cafe where jefferson was spinning house music all night. i just love that place.

Chris Heard's cookout on Saturday was very nice.....and hot. no one else could pull off grilling burgers and chicken for 40 people and make it seem so effortless. I caught up with a few people I haven't seen in some time, and then it was off to work for FUPA duty. definitely not my favorite part of the weekend.

And then there was Shout. I was a little disappointed when I heard that I would be spinning inside due to noise complaints in the past, until I saw the new DJ table. plus it was hot as hell outside and I was in the perfect place to spin and watch the beautiful boys arrive in clans. the greats, the near- greats, the junior league, the big bicep club. they were all out in their $90 stretchy t-shirts from bloomingdales.

As much as I like to play obscure white labels and tracks you may never hear in a club, I know that these boys still like anthems. This became clear when I put on Mariah's new "say something" and one guy took his shirt off and danced in front of the giant fan on the patio in a real seductive kind of way. that's hot.....

find yourself a friend

you know, i could go the rest of my life without hearing the song they played each time a contestant was kicked off of American Idol.... the one that goes, "so you've had a bad day...". It is everywhere now, radio stations, IPOD playlists, even at the gym. As Erik says, the only thing bad about their day is that they are now committed to a full American Idol tour. You know the cheesy, glitzy, tour that will sell out the Des Moines arena with thousands of overweight women in acid washed jean shorts singing along to "play that funky music".

on the other hand, I could get used to four day work weeks. What a treat they are. and I am looking forward to tomorrow night's happy hour and heavy hor d'oeuvres atop the Glenn Hotel. With panoramic views of the Atlanta skyline, it doesn't get much better. unless, of course, it was 70 degrees outside instead of a balmy 90. welcome to summer in atlanta.

If you can see where this is gonna lead

It's a sad day in Atlanta. This morning, the bulldozers arrived at the shell of its former self...Backstreet. To begin the demolition of a dilapidated building that I spent so many nights (and early mornings) dancing to some of the best (and worst) music.

it was a place that we all loved to hate. of course, like so many things in life, now that it is gone we seem to long for the days when there was a place that was always open and pouring. back when i would drop by early on a saturday evening to get my hand stamped "just in case" and to avoid "the long line". a place where all walks of life could be found; and oddly enough despite the booze and drugs everyone seemed to get along.

if you never walked through the doors, you will never fully understand what it was like. from the cabaret, to the creature at the poker table, to the "glow stick man" in his sequin blazer, it truly was an interesting place to say the least. so it is sad to see it all left behind.... in a pile of rubble. but I also think about some of the bartenders and security personnel who made their career at backstreet.

farewell backstreet.

after two drinks he's a loser, after three drinks he's a star

well my weekend wasn't nearly as fruitful as others but i did enjoy myself...several times.

friday night featured a lovely roat dinner on Beverly, courtesy of the Sharley-Turnbulls and Kroger of course. spinach salad, black beans, broccoli.....sounds like a perfect commercial for Beano, and it was. Eric and I ventured over to Amsterdam, the new bar/club adjacent to the fitness factory. it was my first visit and i don't see where all the criticism comes from. I mean, it does remind me of a very large Gordon Biersch, complete with exposed brick walls and plasma tvs every 5 feet, but the crowd was cute and not at all like the "burkhart's west" as it had been described to me. soon after the bewitching hour, i realized that my ride was very buiszy with his next mission so I opted for a cab ride home....alone.

Saturday was John time on the couch with diane. we watched movies and generally didn't do much of anything. I was smart and stayed in saturday night for I had plans with the family on Sunday morning.

The drive out to scarietta on a sunday morning is short and sweet. I was joined by my sister and my 5 year old niece, who is in her bossy stage. lunch featured a delicious strawberry pretzel salad, honey baked ham, fresh green beans, and spiced sweet potatoes. dessert was a rum cake made that morning by my mom. you can't deny that we are a southern family, or alcoholics for that matter.

after lunch, my sister and I went though two large bags of old photos that my mother was looking to throw away! what? I couldn't understand the logic behind it, so I just sat down and flipped through picture after picture. it's funny how many things you forget through the years, from your favorite terry cloth ernie shirt to the sun-in dyed "bowl cut" I had in my 5th grade school photo, not to mention the "mock" turtle neck. pretty.

I came home with an abundance of left overs and finished the evening with a cookout for Joel's birthday. again, amazing food was served, spirits were consumed, and i even finished the evening with a little breakdancing in the living room. happy birthday jolene.

ain't nothin' goin' on but the rent

I sure would like to have been at the closing party of Paradise Garage in september of 1987. marking the end to an era of house music, and Larry Levan's 10 year residency at a very famous club. but things inevitably come to an end, much like the closing of backstreet. oh how i do miss backsteet, though I know that i am at a point in my life where going out clubbing several weekends a month is far from a priority. none of us planned to go to backstreet, however, it is funny how you would somehow end up there.....amongst several of your friends. and now today, i am sure that i wouldn't be there every weekend.........but it would be nice just to know that it is there should you change your mind.

but i think what is most frustrating to me is that there never was a final party of backstreet, a night where we could dance and reminisce about a magical place that had become a part of our lives. a way to bring closure to an era, and hopefully move on. with the closing of backstreet at 2am, to the removal of all liquor in a place that was proud to say "always open and pouring", we all thought these changes were just temporary. no one could believe that this place, this institution to gays and straights for nearly 30 years, really would close its doors for good. but it did without a final blow out, something that i think the city and the local residences should have allowed.......

I feel much better today, despite the rainy, dreary weather outside. this morning started with the "service awards breakfast" honoring people for their work of 5+ years. This year marked my 6th year at piedmont as the breakfast was held last year just short of the 5 year mark. The food was really good and the pastel linen napkins were real real fancy. naturally Mary Jenks, the cafeteria manager, was real busy acting busy and just being real busy. the president of piedmont spoke, sharing service awards for people that have been there for 20 years or more. i got a little bored and found some of the introductions sort of funny. they would say something like......"miss emma whitehead, the lead housekeeper in environmental services, enjoys gardening, antiquing(sp?), and creating crafts". creating crafts? what's that?

yes, I feel much better today, though i still have to work on one more thing....

now i have errands to run but the traffic and rainy weather have me thinking otherwise.

bending the truth...

much like the donkster, I am in a bit of a funk today as well. and for no reason. I got 8 solid hours of sleep (despite all the weird dreams), had a productive day at work (even though the joint commission for the accreditation of hospitals made a surprise visit today), and had a fairly good work out. I don't feel bad, but for some reason people have been getting on my nerves. a good friend of mine at work told me I as "hormonal" today, and I suppose that just may be the case. As it's not just women that can play the "PMS" card, men have hormones too.....I am really looking forward to the male menopause, often times referred to as the "male climacteric". I guess that is when I will go out and by a boat or a fancy convertible. I think when it comes down to it, I really just need to get laid.....

my weekend wasn't very exciting as it was spent on call. In fact, I only left my condo to go into the hospital for FUPA duty. I did meet the Mayor and his friends at the movie on Sunday to see MI 3. I enjoyed the flick, full of action from start to finish, with the usual love story thrown in somewhere. And some may argue with me, but as weird as tom cruise is, he is still very handsome.......and short. i don't like short.

I'm spunky, I like my oatmeal lumpy

Here's a digital underground hump day list of things on my mind:

--what's up with poor dentition these days? especially those that are aware of the condition and refuse to accept a mint or piece of gum. do you think the rest of us want to smell the peridontal disease on your breath? instead of buying the convertible mercedes, maybe you should have considered the $20,000 you need in dental work.
--I wonder if Rosie Odonnell dons a FUPA starter sling every morning? and and does she have a combo starter-sling-strap-on for the bedroom?
--I am absolutely loving Jody Wisternoff's new track "cold drink, hot girl". At only 29 years old, this DJ/producer/remixer is one to watch. Also known as one half of the popular group Way out West, Jody's new track can be purchased on digital download from Beatport. Melodic house? me like.
--McDonough's Angie Aparo has a new EP out this week with an appearance scheduled for Saturday night at Smith's Ole Bar. The EP, set to be released in three parts, is available online here.
--I like Chicane's new single "Stoned in Love" featuring Tom Jones. The remix package features work by the Young punx and vertigo and I have to say the track is starting to grow on me.
--I'm on call this weekend so I don't foresee a cinco de mayo celebration in my future. Unless it occurs on Thursday. Halo anyone?

Cold drink, hot girl

I was surprised when I got into the car yesterday morning and turned on the radio to hear the morning dj talking about FUPAs. Well, they were ACTUALLY using the term "Panis", which in the medical community is defined as "an overhanging apron of redundant, abdominal skin". Sort of like a FUPA but not quite the same. Either way, I would be mortified to have one. Could you imagine the humility? It seems that a local hospital has invested in a Panis retractor (similar to the FUPA starter slings we have in the cath lab), yet this device costs $1400 and allows the nurse or clinician access to the skin underneath the panis. Usually for cleansing purposes or possibly some sort of vaginal or pelvic exam. Of course I was picking up the phone to call in and share some stories about all the Paulding county specials with malodorous, pungent, and moist FUPAs. But I resisted as others jumped at the opportunity.

One girl was talking about her work at a nursing home where she came across a half eaten PB'nJ sandwich tucked between one of the folds of a low hanging Panis. Another man told a story of a patient brought into the ER where a remote control was found in his Panis, having gone missing just three weeks prior. I guess you never have to worry if your pants have pockets, as you always have a place to hide your keys, your wallet, or even a protein shake.

You know....feathers, no dots.....

And what a perfect weekend for a road trip to Charleston. It was Beck-yeah's 30th birthday, so Robert and I headed east on I-20 for a celebratory birthday at the beach. Here's how it all went down....

The trip to Charleston is lengthy, but we managed to spend the time listening to music and catching up on gossip. the only problem was that we were on two very different elimination schedules, so we had to stop at just about every rest area along the way. plus there was dinner of course, so we didn't roll into Charleston until 10pm. the house out on Folly Beach was cute, small, and very "lakehouseish" with a lovely display of empty yellow tail wine bottles above the kitchen cabinets. I didn't care as we were right on the beach and only had to pay $50 for the weekend, thanks to Becky's landlord.

so it was off to Art's Bar and Grill where we arrived to a live band playing covers from the 80s and 90s. I think we walked in right as they were playing the cure - just like heaven. and it was clear that we were the most sober people there. at one point i looked down to see a miniature version of Weird Al Yankovich dancing next to me that we nicknamed "the hobbit" as he was about 4 feet tall.

Saturday morning we walked down the The Lost Dog cafe for a fantastic brunch. This place was very cute, reminding me of a Sigma Nu-infused Zim's Bagel Bakery in Athens. Just the right amount of frat boy and granola and some of the cutest boys on the island. The biscuits with sausage gravy was the best thing served and we left feeling very full.

The rest of the afternoon was spent on the deck out in the sun. With temps in the upper 70s and not a cloud in the sky, I couldn't imagine a better place to be. I did apply sunscreen twice, only failing to properly cover my receding hair line and ears, which provides for a fairly unattractive sunburn. Becky's roommates joined us arriving with iced down beer, a video IPOD with portable speakers, and some of the funniest stories I have heard in years. I mean these girls talk more openly about their bowel, bladder, and sexual habits than the other nurses I work with at the hospital. and to think that they are all members of the Junior League in Charleston is humorous. I learned about "frottage", "shittythongs", and "winter bush", all terms I was unfamiliar with so I found it necessary to educate them about FUPAs and Paulding County specials.

Becky's birthday dinner Saturday night was held at a lovely restaurant downtown named Cypress. We were in a back room with about 35 of her close friends and coworkers. The arugula salad was delicious, but the service was very slow, and I got cranky when my entree came out at 10:30pm. plus I think i chose poorly as I picked the seared tuna instead of having a filet, the latter of which was superior in taste. we later had drinks at Pearl's where Edward McCuterton joined us (remember, the boy who sold me the coach watch on my last visit?) and I witnessed Becky take nearly 5 shots within a 45 minute time period. One of which was a straight shot of bourbon....yuck. I thought one outgrows shots once they turn 21 but I could be wrong... but she held her liquor that night and I don't even think she was with diane on sunday. who knows, she could have had TRD, aka Time Release Diane, but i will have to get back to you on that one.

After lunch at the Kickin's chickin' on Sunday, we said our goodbyes and headed back west. This time, we only stopped once and made the trip in just over 4 hours. only to arrive back in atlanta to temps in the 50s.

Happy Birthday Becky!

souvenirs, novelties, party tricks

While I was attending birthday parties and bread pudding bake-offs this past weekend, others were home with a severe case of food poisoning. The Mayor and a few other members of the varsity squad were stricken with the illness after dining on guacamole at Zocalo's. Note to self: stay away from anything served in Lava rock bowls.

So yesterday I stopped by the Mayor's to check out the new home renovation and assist him in obtaining adequate hydration. Four days of vomiting and diarrhea leaves you quite dehydrated and looking rather puny. After a liter of saline had infused, he later informed me that he was finally able to void his bladder after nearly two days. so nice that I could assist him with his excretory functions.

cause you're a risk and a borderline

I have to say they have done a very nice job with the new condo building across the street from me. Although I haven't seen the inside, I have had the opportunity to watch this structure being built starting with the demolition of an old apartment building and ending with the above picture. I know what people are saying.....don't we have a enough condos here in atlanta? and I know the market is probably saturated. this building has class though. it doesn't soar above the others looking exactly like my building and the four or five other by the same developer. now i have several friends who have purchased in the above building, and I am just waiting for an invite. i know the assistant is making the short move over....only I don't think his new balcony on the 5th floor provides for a quick exit.... If I had a photograph of you, something to remind me

I honestly cannot understand why someone would spend the money on a bluetooth headset then not take full advantage of its features. Today on my drive home from work I was nearly run out of the lane on spring street by some idiot in a bright yellow cobalt. I look over and see the flashing ear piece in place, only to notice that the driver is looking down at his phone and presumably flipping through the address book. Isn't the point of a "wireless" headset just that? to put the phone in the passenger seat, press the button on the side, and utilize the voice recognition software in an effort to pay closer attention to the road? come on people.

Here kitty kitty kitty.......

What a beautiful weekend it was down here in Atlanta. Now if it would only stay like this for a couple of months...

After a thorough condo cleaning Friday afternoon, I dined on sesame ginger baked salmon filet, spinach salad, and green peas. (you know, the ones in the silver can? guilty pleasure of mine that has extended into adulthood) and for someone who doesn't cook very often, I impressed myself. Kelli and anthony stopped by and we headed over to Mid City for a couple of drinks. the evening ended early as it should have only i vaguely remember placing a couple of unanswered phone calls just before going to sleep. must.put.down.phone.

Saturday morning I dropped by Piedmont Hospital to check on a friend who recently underwent urgent quintuple bypass surgery at the young age of 45. Just goes to show you really never know. and what a big part genetics play in heart disease.

Then it was off to lunch with my parents, where as usual, they ordered the exact same thing. every single time. Such creatures of habit we all become as we get older....i guess. but it was nice to catch up with them, and it made me realize how lucky I am to have family close by.

JohnBrown's impromptu dinner on Saturday night was a real treat. The tenderloin was tender and juicy, but the fried okra was nearly perfect. That has to be one of my favorite vegetables and I have yet to find anyone who can come close to my mom's. I will order it on occasion at the Piedmont Cafeteria only to be left with a fried batter ball and a small piece of frozen okra in the middle. Note to JohnBrown: mom says if you let the oil heat a little longer before putting the okra in you will end up with a crispier end product. After dinner, the 6 of us sat on the porch sipping wine and telling stories of college experiences, past vacations, and of course old Backstreet Days.

Sunday Easter brunch at Joel and Brad's was divine. Do you see a food theme here? Lasagna, fresh fruit, cheese, and mimosas. we sat on the deck and enjoyed the beautiful spring air. Then it was off to the leather tea dance at King Plow. It always makes me chuckle to see the hairy, leather daddys dressed in a harness and a nelly decorated easter hat. somehow that just doesn't equate. The DJ that we appropriately named T-Dance Pat, was busy in her white lattice-encased DJ booth throwing down some gospel house tunes with a lot of "hallelujahs" and "praise". But frankly I couldn't really dance to this type music. You end up just moving side to side, so I spent most of the party on the rooftop deck enjoying the sun and lack of humidity.

The evening ended with a dip in Joel and Brad's pool and a beautiful sunset. It was surreal. Other than the leaves rustling in the trees, it was a silent evening, reminding me so much of P-Town. Speaking of Ptown.......

Now you've got me thinking

There is nothing worse than being hit with two pricey and unexpected bills, administrations, and/or loans in one week. My jeep that has been very good to me over the last seven years ended up costing me big time. I thought I was simply needing new brakes, yet I did notice over the last week that it seemed to be leaking oil.....ever so slowly. Turns out, the brakes are fine but the oil leak was a separate and expensive issue. I found myself looking online for a new car last night but it is hard to think about a $450 car payment when you haven't had one in a few years. So it's fixed now and I am happy. The second issue will probably be a two year process....

It has been a while since I have posted any of my new mixes so here is something I threw together for Bret's Birthday. Tracklist to follow..

"This is Ardell, and what is the nature of your emergency at this very time?"

Ah.......Paulding County. Such a booming area for growth these days. And heart disease too. Today brought us young 36 year old Norman. Having already undergone a double bypass heart operation a few years ago, Norman was admitted to the hospital yesterday with chest pains. It seems it started last week when he was released from jail. Note: the charge was only child porn so he is harmless. Norman just can't seem to change his ways. Still butting 3 packs of smokes a day, he is anxious to get back to his job at the Waffle House out in Dallas, Georgia.

On a side note, I recently read that an ambulance company in Las Vegas has responded to the growing population of morbidly obese patients by purchasing "bariatric ambulances" equipped to haul patients in excess of 500 pounds. Apparently, in the last six months they have had over 75 calls that required extra man power to load and transport these "heavier" patients. The $250,000 ambulance, which looks like other ambulances only wider, comes complete a large-sized gurney, a winch, a full assortment of FUPA slings, and ramps capable of loading up to 1600 pounds. The company praises the new ambulance as it is much safer for the paramedic's back and is a better "stabilizer" for the patient. And according to the CDC, of Nevada's nearly 1.7 million adults, 21 percent or 357,000 are obese, and this was in 2004. Thankfully, the next generation ambulance may hold patients who tip the scale at 1000 pounds.

My question remains the same. When will people take responsibility for their lives?

do it 2 nite

What a weekend it was. The most beautiful weather this year.

Friday = burgers and beers at Moe & Joe's, a trip by the Metropolis and then city living at its finest. We walked and enjoyed spring in Atlanta.

Saturday = apps at John Brown's. A great visit with Walt and Philip after nearly a year, the final performance of Urinetown, and Mrs. Pennywise in a FUPA starter sling.

Sunday = A visit from Mr. Margarita Daddy, a grand party for Bret's 40th, a meeting with Olivia, and a night cap at Blake's. Pictures below courtesy of Twon.

Monday = no Diane.... That's odd.

Rota

Yes, I am back, and I apologize for the hiatus, but sometimes you just need a break. Not that there hasn't been anything to talk about of course.

This week has been exhausting. What started out on Tuesday as a mild case of the "STOMACH" (screamed in a loud voice) turned into a simultaneous vomit/diarrhea session chez moi complete with fever, chills, and body aches. At first thought, I found it easy to place blame on the burrito I purchased at Joey's Mexican in the bottom of my condo building. You see where the support for the local businesses gets you. But it turns out there is some sort of 24 hour "Rotavirus" going around. I cannot remember the last time I was sick with flu-like symptoms, and I quickly remember how miserable it can be. So today it was back to work thanks to Gatorade and Imodium.

Dinner tonight with TheBoyScout was nice until it turned increasingly awkward when discussion about our mutual flirtation and his recent overt and forward comments to me prompted him to act like it was nothing more than showing a little sass. Come on now, talk about setting double standards? sheesh.

The walk-thrus have commenced over at 905 Juniper. I have been very busy polishing my binoculars and can almost see the "Batman signal" courtesy of The Assistant....

This weekend promises several Dooley caravans from Paulding County with homemade strollers with beer holders and sleeveless knit tops. for the festival and all. Cause they can smell a funnel cake fryin' from 40 miles away.

Buschy's 40th birthday bash on 5th street. I can't think of a better way to spend the afternoon than sitting on the porch sipping frozen margs with the boys.

Some touching? What's that?

get into my milkshake

It turns out Diane is a well traveled lady. She ventured to the big apple with johnbrown and they called me last night around 1:15 am to alert me of a new tune that was playing at the local watering hole. It's a cheeky mash up of Kelis's "milkshake" and Madonna's "get into the groove". I call it "get into my milkshake".

On a lighter note, the spring weather in atlanta has brought out some of the most interesting characters to date. Just today brought us young Johnny from none other than Paulding County, in the unincorporated city of Hiram. Standing at 5'10" and weighing just 129 pounds, this 46 year old man looked every bit of 70. He reminded me of a poster of drug addiction. At first, I thought he was suffering from hepatitis or cancer, then I realized that he was really good friends with the mean girl. You know, Tina. Someone forgot to tell Johnny that smoking the mean girl will wreak havoc on the coronaries. Now his heart his functioning at about 10%, low enough to place him on the heart transplant list. Only problem is that Johnny is not a good candidate as he suffers from what we would call....."non compliance". When it comes down to it, Johnny would rather spend his cash on a carton of Dorals than his anti-rejection medications. neat.

If you want it

I have to say that David Gray put on quite a show last night. Having enjoyed his music long before the infamous "Babylon" song came out, I was eager to hear him in concert. And the Fox Theater is by far one of the best venues for this sort of intimacy. Dori and I decided to enjoy the nice spring weather and walk to Baraonda for dinner where we dined on Arugula salad, pizza, and red wine. With a wait time for a table reaching well over an hour, we strategically placed ourselves near the bar and sipped on wine until two spots opened up. Though the hot latin bartender was not working, the very cute pocket hottie was, and he took very good care of us.

The place was filling up when we arrived, and so a quick stop by the bathroom was in order. While waiting outside for Dori to come out, a random girl from Acworth asked me, "Do you actually like David Gray or are you just here with your girlfriend?". I replied, "Well, Both. I do enjoy David Gray's music and my girlfriend is in the bathroom". She then went on about the last she saw David Gray in concert where the two gay guys in front of her got into an altercation simply because one looked at the other wrong. hmm.....I can see that.

The show was lasted about two hours, and though we were in the balcony, the acoustic were excellent. I especially enjoyed the cello and bass player who would break into a solo that was really beautiful. Pulling tunes from all of his albums, David Gray really put his heart into the performance. Of course, he ended with "Babylon" which is just fine by me.

funky town

After the official job offer arrived on Friday, I spent the better part of the weekend deciding what to do. Though the position out in California is a great opportunity and a stepping stone into the medical device industry, it does require a relocation to a city that is known to be one of the most expensive places in the country to live. And to be honest, I am just not ready to make that jump. My decision was solidified today when I received a voice message from my 4 year old niece telling me that "Mommy has a little baby in her tummy that will arrive in October". Great news indeed.

Diane

you know it has been nearly two weeks since i have seen the likes of her, but damn if she didn't show up this morning unannounced. let's see if i can piece it all together....

last night i dragged Heyward over to the grand opening of The Glenn boutique hotel. it was a Jezebel event, so everyone was out sporting the most fabulous spring fashions. and porcelain veneers of course. the space is really beautiful and made me feel like i was in south beach except for the 40 degree weather outside. and the real lion sprawled out on the fiery red stage. i thought the circus was last week? the bar was open and pouring on the house, and dj scott anthony threw down some downright groovy beats, thanks to his skills of course and my powered Mackie monitors I let him borrow.

after being bumped into one too many times, we took a tour of BED and then rode the elevator to the top floor to check out the rooftop deck. The bar isn't finished yet, but the panoramic view of the atlanta skyline is breathtaking. The Jezebel suite is gorgeous, and the other rooms weren't too shabby. i really hope this hotel will bring some life to downtown, and i can easily picture spinning an Out & About event this summer on da roof...

after dinner, we rallied Heyward's roommate to join us for drinks at Halo, where I managed to score the newest Brandon Sutton CD. and catch up with dougneal and chrisheard. i guess people just don't go out during the week as the place wasn't too crowded. the music was great as usual, and several overpriced cocktails later, we departed. only to pop over to teen night at wetbar. and let me tell ya, it was like being in alice in wonderland. clans of pocket gays lined the front bar, and dj greg dean was busy in heavy diva mode in the booth. always nice to see a few queens out fiercing on the dancefloor on a thursday night. thankyoudeborahcox.

this morning i woke up sans diane only to hear the toilet flush and see her smiling face appear in the doorway. thank god i am not working today.

Moving into Light

And to think this could be my view.....everyday...

To say that I am glad to be home is an understatement. I have spent the last six days living out of a suitcase in various hotels, apartments, and country inns, and I was very happy to get off the MARTA train at the midtown station last night. until i realized it was raining and I was without an umbrella. plus, my keyfob was buried deep in my suitcase. oh, and I was out of toilet paper. neat.

The trip to California was nice. After a grueling 8 hour interview on Friday, I sped up US 101 North in my metallic blue Pontiac Vibe to the beautiful city of San Francisco. Friday night featured a nice meal at Lavende Lounge on Mission Street. Such a hip and trendy place, complete with a dj spinnin' downtempo lounge music and some of the best lamb burgers I have ever had. It was so nice catching up with Beaux, and meeting his boyfriend Bob that I have heard so much about.

Saturday morning, Beaux and I hit the Castro for brunch and shopping. The weather was cold and rainy, with bursts of sun dispersed throughout the day. I finally found the new Saint Etienne CD I have heard so much about, and even picked up a DVD of the Delta Heavy tour from 2003 featuring Sasha, John Digweed, and Jimmy Van M. We laughed and cruised just about every single guy on the block, including the hotty McHot german guy in the boutique.

We opted for a movie on Saturday night instead of going to "Dirty" at Stud Bar. I can't deny that I was sort of hoping for a night of dancing, but with the early flight it was probably better to have a quiet evening. We saw the new Woody Allen "matchpoint" which was a thriller about love, passion, and betrayal. It was very good.

The early part of this week was spent in Winston-Salem, NC for a training class. I learned a lot, and they took very good care of us, but sometimes you miss the comfort of your own bed. I arrived home last night only to get a message from California. They are ready to give me an offer on the job.......and I have no idea what to do......... Posted by Picasa

Stars Above Us

Well I am finally back from rainy California. Seems we had identical weather back in Atlanta. Now it is off to Greensboro tomorrow for a training class. Let's talk later this week. There is much to discuss.... Posted by Picasa

Now you've lit my fuse

I have never cared for Valentine's Day. all the pink and red felt, balloons, lace doilies, and cheesy cards just make me want to vomick. and why put someone through all of this? i guess some women do find it romantic, but that is beyond me. and then you are chastised should you show up without flowers or a card in hand. I don't know why I feel this way, maybe because the only Valentine's day I can remember was about three years ago and it marked the beginning of the end of my relationship.

so I planned on a quiet night at home. until my cute coworker Jason informed me that he would rather not spend his night at home in Kansas.... I mean Canton. I could only picture him curled up in bed watching Women's entertainment and polishing off a magnum of Yellow Tail. I suggested we grab a bite to eat after work...

So we drove around midtown trying to think of a suitable place to grab dinner, as he was wearing a baseball cap and a t-shirt. we decided to try Atlantic Station, though I insisted that we avoid Copeland Cheesecake crap. we settled for a glass of wine at the bar at CPK. Which was just fine by me as they pour J. Lohr, one of my favorite everyday cabernets. turns out, the majority of the staff at this location are gay, and Bruce and Charles took a likin' to us. So we continued to smile and drink and eat and smile and drink and soon we were full and tipsy. So nice when the bill arrived and it was only $50.

I think one of them told me they used to perform in drag shows at Backstreet under the name "Gender Snap". Then he also told us he hadn't slept the night before and was wondering what we were doing later. That was our cue to leave.

next up: an interview in Santa Clara and a weekend with Beaux in San Francisco.

The city feels clean this time of night

It was so calming to wake up this morning to see the light dusting of snow scattered along the streets of midtown. It sure beats the dreary cold rain any day. And what a great weekend it was. celebrating life with you friends and family is a good thing.

Friday night, an attempt to have dinner over at Atlantic Station ended with a delivery from Domino's. We were hoping to try the new mexican restaurant, Rosa Mexicano, only to find there wait was almost two hours and they do not take reservations. I was a little hesitant to have mexican food so soon after my bad case of "STOMACH" on thursday, but I figured quesadillas were a safe choice. Instead, we stopped by Lobby for a cocktail. I must say it is a nice space but entirely too crowded. and then there was the crowd....diverse indeed. I cannot imagine being a resident at Twelve and having to weave my way though all the people just to get to my condo.

I met the entire family for lunch on Saturday. It was Mom's birthday, as she turned 62 on Friday. I just love seeing my niece, Molly Catherine, grow up. She will be 5 in May and gets cuter every time I see her. It funny, as she now has this shy act when I am around her. So different from the chatty two year old I remember. As I was I trying to make her laugh when she remarks, "Uncle John, you are embarrassing me!"

I managed to have a short nap on Saturday in preparation for Anthony and CQ's birthday celebration that night. The gang gathered at Bazaaar for drinks then on to Eleven50 for Kaskade. I was very excited for this night as he put on such a great "concert" the last time he was in Atlanta. And what a perfect night of music it was. Housey, groovy, with only a hint of progressiveness. The crowd was hot and I really find that Saturday nights at Eleven50 are becoming more and more mixed. He managed to play some of his own production work such as "Steppin Out", "Everything", and "It's You, It's Me" (Thanks to CQ for that request). The highlight for me was Ryan breaking out Freeform 5 - No more conversation. I was floored. Other notable tracks included Soul Central - "Need you now" and ending his set with the Aurora remix of Late night Alumni - "Empty Streets". pure class.

The after party at Springforth was fun. J-Luv threw down a nice progressive-tinged house set and I must say that it wasn't nearly as sketch as some of the gay parties I have attended. In fact, I can report that a certain DJ from Halo might have been getting his groove on into the early morning hours.

Sunday featured a late lunch at Vickery's and several $2 PBR's on tap. Signature time indeed.

Lips like Sugar

I honestly cannot remember a more exhausting week. We have been slammed at work, helping all the Paulding and Putnam county specials with their heart conditions only to have them eat, drink, and smoke themselves into the grave. Thankless work after you spend 50+ hours with the hopes that maybe, just maybe, someone will take some responsibility. I guess you could call it job security...

I did manage to find some time to forget about the moist FUPAs and dental caries. Tuesday night featured a nice dinner with a real cute boy from South Khak-a-Lhaki and Wednesday night I caught up with BJ for dinner at Eats. It was my first experience at this restaurant that I have passed countless number of times on Ponce. I wasn't really impressed, but the lima beans and macaroni were tasty.

Then came another busy day on Thursday. One of the sales reps at work catered lunch from some god awful mexican restaurant and shortly after consuming the beef tacos and refried beans I was ill.... first a continuous heartburn followed by waves of nausea that extended into the evening hours. At one point, I contemplated calling Ardell at Paulding County 911 as I was convinced I was having a cardiac event. On top of that my throat was becoming sore, and I was fearful that I was getting sick. So I jumped into bed and 9.5 hours of sleep later, I felt like a new man.

All I can say is that I am glad the weekend as arrived.
